Wedding Tip of the Month

Don't Be Super Bride

I say this from experience, ‘don’t try to be a Super Bride.’ I was on a budget for my wedding and thought that if I wanted everything to come out perfect I had to do everything myself. I had my wedding day all planned out by the half hour. At the time it was my first wedding experience and I really did not realize the amount of time needed for wedding tasks. That day, nothing took the amount of time that I had planned. I had no choice but to delegate, and had decided that too late. Missing my hair appointment, I found myself running through the mall, from salon to salon, looking for an open schedule. Super Bride was hit hard by Kryptonite. Lessons learned and solutions to problems decided quickly, the day still turned out perfect. In the end, everything really does work out.

For your wedding day, the only task you should have for yourself it to show up. Delegate every other task to persons that you trust are responsible and put your tasks in writing, being very specific. Remember, on your wedding day you shouldn’t be Super Bride, you should be Princess Bride.

Here are some scheduling tips:

  1. Make sure all family and bridal party are aware of when and where they need to be for photos.
  2. Ask your professionals how long it will take to have your hair and make-up done. They usually take longer than if you were doing it yourself.
  3. If you are having your bridesmaids' hair and make-up professionally done as well, make sure they have a separate person working on them from you, so that you are ready on time no matter what.
  4. Add an hour of extra time to the hair and make-up planning and use that extra time to relax and have a few finger foods.
  5. Make sure your bridesmaids are dressed and ready a half-an-hour to an hour before you, so that they can help you into your gown, veil and jewelry.
  6. You should schedule about an hour to get dressed so that the photographer and videographer can get shots of you getting into your dress, jewelry and finishing touches.
  7. At least an hour should be scheduled for the photographer to take formal pictures of the bride and groom separately before the ceremony.
  8. The photographer and videographer should have plenty of time available to them before the ceremony to set up their equipment and get a layout of the location.
  9. Schedule at least an hour for after ceremony photo session.
  10. Don't forget to add in travel time.
  11. Your DJ should help you schedule your reception.
  12. Make sure to schedule with the DJ your main events to finish before the photographer and videographer leave so that they can capture it all.
  13. Schedule to have everyone seated before the reception start time and keep in mind the amount of time it will take for everyone to find their assigned seats.
